It is expected of companies betrothed in any project within the
country to have conscience to engage in Corporate Social Responsibilities to
better the lives the locals.
During a recent visit, The People’s Republic of China Premier Li
Keqiang stressed the same stating categorically that all Chinese firms should
take part in CSRs.
If give-back mission by China Road and Bridge Corporation CRBC (Kenya)
is anything to by, the stretch along the Standard Gauge Rail could benefit in
terms of community initiatives among road safety programs.
Some past CRBC contributions to local society and communities in
Kenya are enumerated below.
At the beginning of 2011, Kenya suffered the worst drought in 60
years. As a member of Kenya-China Economic and Trade Association, CRBC
organized the campaign of “Chinese for Kenya–Turkana Relief”. The campaign
raised Ksh 25 million donated by Chinese enterprises in Kenya and overseas
Chinese firms. Some donation was used to purchase 60 tons of corn flour and 5
tons of red beans.
In 2012, initiated by CRBC, 16 Chinese enterprises of
Kenya-China Economic and Trade Association raised USD 600,000 for the extension
project of the MCEDO Beijing Primary School.

“9/21” terrorist attack in Westgate Shopping Mall, Nairobi.
Localization
Currently, there are 85 Chinese employees working in CRBC Kenya
Office together with 1582 local employees accounting for 95 percent of the
total number of staff.
In order to inspire local employees, CRBC implements
localization management actively and explores the management methods of local
employees.
For local employees, their jobs range from equipment operation,
experiment, survey, and equipment maintenance and project management among
others.
CRBC lays emphasis on local employee’s capacity building,
provides promotional opportunities and enhances their motivation with
humanistic care, so as to promote corporate image and employee’s loyalty.
In order to enhance local employees’ identity and sense of
belonging to the company, “Long Service Award” was created in 2010. The awards
are given every two years to commend and inspire the outstanding local
employees who have worked for over 10 years for their service and hard work. So
far, this event has been held twice and 146 staff has got awarded. The most
senior local employee awarded has worked at CRBC (Kenya) for 27 years. CRBC has
taken them as family, which is invaluable competitiveness for its operation in
Kenya for more decades to come.
